Killed in Action on Thursday 4th October 1917


Born in Alva,Clackmannanshire in 1896, the second son of Andrew and Janet BREMBER (née MARTIN).

1901 census...Andrew [5] was at 17 East Leven Street, Burntisland, Fife with his father [33] a railway signalman born Alva, his mother Janet [33] born Alva and his brothers Albert [9] born Alva, James [4] born Tillicoutry and William [2] born Alva.

1911 census...Now 15, Andrew was a stableman at Beechwood Stables, Exning. The Scottish records are not on line so unable to record family.

Since the 1911 census Andrew appears to have moved into Newmarket since he is not on any roll of honour in Exning and appears on the Newmarket War Memorial

A pension card has him and his brother William (Private in Scottish Rifles, killed 22-12-1917) with mother at Foreigner View, Lammerlaws, Burntisland, Scotland


15th Royal Warwicks were in reserve for the attack on Polderhoek Chateau ( near Gheluvelt) on the 4th October providing carrying parties to the front then later moved up to join the 14th Battalion in close support between Tower Hamlets and Northampton Farm. Below is the terrain he would have had to cross, under fire and carrying ammunition boxes ! The battalion lost Andrew and 8 other men that day.

Andrew was found here, identified by his discs, and removed to Hooge Crater in 1919

Andrew is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium Ref: XIII.A.19
and commemorated on the plaque in the Astley Club, Fred Archer Way, Newmarket.
